Behind the Scenes
"Earth's Fable" Our Børn Fall 2009 Campaign
Created January 2009 on San Juan Island, Washington
When we first saw the designs for the Børn Fall 2009 collection, it was easy to capture the feeling of the artistry in two words "Earth's Fable." And with that theme as our inspiration, our destination for the Fall 2009 campaign seemed clearly evident: the San Juan Islands of Washington.
If you've never been to the San Juan Islands, we can truly say that this is a place you absolutely must experience at least once in your lifetime. Each island in the San Juans has its own unique cultural spirit and authentic, adventurous personality. But all share some of the most extraordinary natural wonders. Breathtaking coastlines leading to pristine seas of blue, lush cedar forests carpeted in neon-bright mosses, and funky, eclectic homesteads set on rich, rolling countrysides. You may even see a camel named "Mona."
What drew us to the San Juans for our Børn Fall 2009 "Earth's Fable" campaign is what you experience when you step into nature here. Earth's surreal and luminous bounty feels practically at your fingertips. Every winding, off-beat road, every forest trail, every coastline trek took us to a place we can only describe as straight out of a fairytale. For us, "Earth's Fable" was embedded here, and we tried our best to capture it as beautifully as we could in our images for Børn Fall 2009.
One of the things we love most about the San Juans is the people here. Genuine, earthy folks, not too concerned about impressing anyone in particular. True salt of the earth types, who love the water, love the forests and the landscapes, love to grow and eat organic foods, and have pretty much become accustomed to a clean life of art, sport, seaside culture and self-sufficiency.
This was actually our second trip to the San Juans to create a Børn campaign. Our first trip was back in January of 2001 for our Fall 2001 collection. Then, we shot mostly on Orcas Island, but that's when we first fell in love with this part of the country. The larger than life natural and organic qualities of this area are just so perfect for our storytelling.
For "Earth's Fable," we shot all of our images on San Juan Island, and stayed at a wonderful and charming cabin resort called Lakedale Resort. Here, a winding dirt road takes you to a spectacular lake setting with authentic cabins nestled in the heart of the forest. No cell service, no TVs in the cabins, but plenty of natural beauty to keep us occupied while we took a break from the workload. By the time we left Lakedale, we felt as if we were leaving some very good friends behind. The people there are warm, kind and real. So if we do go back to San Juan Island to shoot again, we will surely visit them.
