Behind the Scenes
Capturing "American Revival," Our Fall 2010 Campaign
Moab, Utah. January 2010
Freedom. It's the perfect word to describe the feeling you get driving into the rugged valley as you enter deep into the canyon lands of Moab, Utah. The concepts of "American Revival," our Børn Fall 2010 campaign, materialize before you in the most incredibly massive, inspiring ways. Such dramatic and staggering remnants of Mother Nature's work; we knew instantly why the canyon lands here became the sacred and spiritual ground for the earliest Native Americans, the Utes. You can just feel it in the air.
For us, the spirit of the Wild West, the grit of James Dean and the heart of John Wayne were all rolled into one, and handed to us neatly on a rusty piece of tin, shaped and aged by the earth. And that's exactly what we wanted for our Americana-inspired collection. Authentic, rich in tradition, confident in spirit, time-worn in attitude, handcrafted for beauty but tough as nails. The heart of Børn and the culture behind the "American Revival" collection.
As luck would have it, we shot our campaign in January during record cold temps and uncharacteristic snowfall. We didn't expect the snow when we arrived, and were in quite a frenzy re-thinking the look of the campaign since we expected layers of reds, browns and buff colors. Instead, we got a dusting of white, and in some cases, folds of white layered on the canyon lands and walls. But in the end, we embraced the snow, we appreciated its texture and its energy, and we're pleased to say it helped us create our very own, spirited interpretation of Børn "American Revival."
A Hunting We Will Go
Finding the perfect locations for our shots can sometimes be quite the undertaking. And Moab presented a unique set of challenges. Typically in January (we always shoot our Fall campaigns in January), it's cold in Moab, but it's not snowy. You might find a dusting of fresh powder dotting the canyons, but it usually doesn't last long in this intense, sun-baked environment.
When Dave (our photographer) arrived on location, there was snow. And plenty of it. Keith (our Art Director), arrived shortly behind Dave. More snow. Lots more snow. Hmm. Interesting predicament, when the entire Børn Fall 2010 "American Revival" campaign was conceived around the warm, earthy and luminescent shades of the natural canyon walls, cliffs and dust-covered lands.
This kind of snow was rare in Moab, even for January. So off they went, Keith and Dave, on a scouting adventure: hunting for new locations; re-concepting the campaign; reinterpreting the shots and re-crafting a new and now snow-kissed Børn "American Revival."
Swashbuckling their way through miles of rigorous terrain, Keith and Dave would ultimately learn to embrace the pristine beauty and the sculpted organic texture the snowy scenes would bring. And in the end, the 30+ images they would lovingly compose to create Børn "American Revival" would soon become the cause of what can easily be described as boisterous merrymaking from a group of passionate marketeers.
Our favorite part of the adventure? Keith (aka Blue Steel), doing his model-thing as he and Dave set-up the shots. He's awfully good at it, don't you think?
Moab, the Place to Shoot
If you get the chance to experience the beauty and the energy of Moab, you'll soon discover why so many notable landscape photographers from around the world go there to capture images of extraordinary arches, sandstone spires and gaping canyons carved by the mighty Colorado River. Remnants of prehistoric Anasazi and Ancestral Puebloan culture are also prevalent throughout the area. Some of the favorite shooting spots for photographers: Arches National Park, where you'll find incredible rock formations and the largest concentration of natural stone arches in the world. The park is 73,000 acres, and open year-round. Not to miss while you're there: Fiery Furnace, Balanced Rock and Delicate Arch.
Canyonlands National Park is a vast and unusual wilderness area with layers of sandstone rock carved into immense formations. In the heart of the park, the Colorado River and the Green River meet, where they have carved two great canyons through the flat layers of rock there. What to see: Island in the Sky, a high plateau with extraordinary views; The Needles, the epitomy of rock country.
Chelsea. The Friend We Love to Hate
The Chelsea. Our nemesis. This is probably one of the most aggravating, cumbersome and downright painful pieces of equipment to maneuver when you're shooting on location. And we're always shooting on location so Chelsea is always with us. In Moab, you could find her high atop canyon cliffs, on top of massive boulders, and yes, sometimes even hanging from the trees. Chelsea, she's always with us. Needless to say, it's the poor photographer's assistant we feel for the most, for he or she is the one to control the Chelsea. Here's Chris, keeping her under control.
Hats Off to Our Friends at Sorrel River Ranch

Boy were we lucky that Sorrel River Ranch Resort was open for business during our shoot in January, when many places in the Moab area close down after the holidays for an off-season break. What an incredible place, and what an incredible experience we had there. We couldn't have asked for anything more: tucked away among the canyons and nestled along the banks of the Colorado River, this is an authentic ranch/lodge experience but with all the amenities, beauty and service of a multi-multi star luxury resort. Thank you, Sorrel, for your warm welcome, your genuine company, and for making our stay one of our fondest yet.
Favorite Find -- Eklectica Café
This is a real OMG moment. Eklectica Café, right on Main Street in Moab. Amaaaaazing. What a cool little hippie chic place to enjoy some of the tastiest organic eats, especially breakfast. Local art and artisan jewelry, plus an eclectic mix of antique treasures enhance the vibe. And they have a beautiful little patio outside where you can become one with nature. If you're in Moab, this is a "not to miss."
Creating "Mosaic Sands" -- Our Spring 2010 Campaign
Death Valley, California, July 2009
It seemed like destiny when we first saw the location scouting shots from David, our photographer, back in April of last year. Death Valley, California. What an incredibly perfect destination for our upcoming July shoot. Our inspiration was "Mosaic Sands," the concept for the Børn Spring 2010 Collection, and this location perfectly spoke to the design essence of this Collection.
How do you describe a place that truly does feel like a different planet? Moon-like patterns and textures methodically dotting the earth. Softly molded and folded canyons making shapes so harmonious, it's as if an artist from a world above simply reached down and sculpted them by hand. And the color palettes -- layer upon layer of washed earthen color, rich with pure and gentle buff tones, some of them wielding tints of the most exquisite natural pastels you've ever seen. It was the perfect destination for Børn Spring 2010. The untouched, serene natural beauty of Death Valley was exactly what this Collection represented.
But Death Valley in July? Our sheer excitement for such a perfectly designed landscape may have ever so slightly overshadowed a bit of rational thinking. Here's a pic of our car dial showing temps from our first day on location.
In this case, a picture truly does tell a thousand words. And our timing for the shoot happened to coincide with record-setting heat for Death Valley that time of year. Needless to say, this shoot was not easy.
In the end, our experience there was really unlike any other. And the imaging we were able to capture tells the story of a Collection where design and inspiration come from a remarkable place on earth where beauty and time truly do stand still.
Surviving a Photo Shoot in 125°+ Temperatures
Based on real life experience, nothing else -- here's a few "good to know" tidbits, in case you ever find yourself shooting photography for 12 hours+ a day in the desert, in temps over 125°:
| Kool Ties® -- these saved us. Throw the vanity away, these really work. We ordered mixed packs of the tie dyed variety, seemed appropriate for the campaign. | Sun-reflective umbrellas -- we get ours from Sungrubbies.com®. Worth the investment if you're planning long days in the sun, they take the temps down a few degrees. |
| Water -- drink tons and we mean tons of it. Powdered electrolytes can be added, but pure water is recommended. | Wear cotton instead of high tech fabrics -- we actually saw a runner training for a desert marathon covered in loose-fitting, full white cotton attire, head to toe. Apparently there's a reason nomads wore it too. |
| Sunscreen -- we all used the highest spf we could find. Interestingly enough, one of our fair-skinned crew members wore none the last day of the shoot, and didn't get sunburned. Odd. None of us left there with dark sun tans. | Watch for scorpions -- we saw several of these, they hide in the coolest, wet places they can find. Our stylist found one in her hotel room trash can. |
| Wear closed toe footwear -- to protect yourself, and to stay sure footed as you trek through the sand. | We find that your body does acclimate to extreme temps. We didn't have much air conditioning working until about our fourth day there, and once we had it, there were some that didn't even use it. Important to note: be sure your VIP's room has the best air. |
To Our Friends at the Inn at Furnace Creek
We must send a warm Børn thank you (no pun intended) to our friends at the Furnace Creek Resort for opening their Inn for us (it's normally closed in July due to the heat.) They were so gracious to allow us to stay in this magnificent and historical desert oasis. What a surprise to find this kind of luxury and architecture tucked into the desert canyon. Some of us were also intrigued to have met the legendary spirit of Chef Marquez. We thank him too for allowing us to operate out of his glorious, mission-style conference room.
"Earth's Fable" Our Børn Fall 2009 Campaign
Created January 2009 on San Juan Island, Washington
When we first saw the designs for the Børn Fall 2009 collection, it was easy to capture the feeling of the artistry in two words "Earth's Fable." And with that theme as our inspiration, our destination for the Fall 2009 campaign seemed clearly evident: the San Juan Islands of Washington.
If you've never been to the San Juan Islands, we can truly say that this is a place you absolutely must experience at least once in your lifetime. Each island in the San Juans has its own unique cultural spirit and authentic, adventurous personality. But all share some of the most extraordinary natural wonders. Breathtaking coastlines leading to pristine seas of blue, lush cedar forests carpeted in neon-bright mosses, and funky, eclectic homesteads set on rich, rolling countrysides. You may even see a camel named "Mona."
"Jeweled Isles"
Created July 2008 on Sanibel Island in Florida
For Børn Spring 2009, the rich, vibrant and luminescent tones of our "Jeweled Isles" collection came to life on Sanibel Island in Florida. It was our return to a familiar landscape, but reinterpreted into a fresh exploration of jeweled color, sun-washed textures and natural and organic ocean-side simplicity.
Sanibel Island itself is a quirky, fun-loving beachside place where taking your cruiser down the side streets of this island town may have you riding past an alligator or two, slyly meandering through one of the many tiny waterways which seem to surround every beach house neighborhood.
